Student Life

Get Involved with the Department

  • Chem Club

Chem Club is a great way to get involved in the department, community, and university, and to meet new chemistry majors outside of class. Chem Club usually meets every other week, and was recognized as an ACS Outstanding Student Affiliate Chapter multiple times in past years. The club participates in several events such as the local ACS Section Research Symposium, Homecoming, and National Chemistry week. Chem Club frequently hosts career planning workshops, lunches, cookouts, softball games, and other social and outreach activities.

  • Research

In your first couple of years at ISU, we strongly encourage you to consider conducting undergraduate research. Research is an opportunity to have personal interactions with graduate students and faculty, enhance your personal and professional communication skills, and make you more competitive when looking for a job or applying for graduate school.

More to Explore Around Campus

Uptown Normal (one block away) is a popular place for students to frequent for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Look for your fellow Redbirds here!

  • Coffee Hound
  • Jimmy John's
  • D.P. Dough Calzones
  • The historic Normal Theater (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday you can catch a classic or limited-release movie)

Even closer (right across the street), you can find quick and delicious dining at the Watterson Dining Commons or Subway.

Illinois State University has high-speed WiFi available throughout campus. While you're in between classes you can browse TikTok, chat with friends, or work in the Chemistry Resource room (located in Julian Hall). There is always something to do on campus, and we encourage you to get involved!
