Curriculum

The Master of Science in Chemistry Education (M.S.C.E.) is a professional degree designed to improve the content and pedagogical knowledge of teachers of chemistry who already possess a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.

Coursework

A total of 33 credit hours is required and obtained by the following:

  • Chemistry Content— 12 credit hours from the following: CHE 315, 350, 342, 380.11, 380.41, 380.52, 380.53, 380.54, 388, or any 380 or 400-level course in Inorganic, Organic, Analytical, Physical, or Biochemistry for which the teacher has appropriate prerequisites. No credit will be granted for an ISU course if a student has already taken an equivalent course elsewhere.
  • Chemistry Education/Science Education— 15 credit hours from the following: CHE 380.48, 432, 433, 401.01, 401.02, 401.03 401.04, 401.05, 401.06, 402.01, 402.02, 403.01, 403.02, TCH 401, 450, 451, 453
  • Action Research— 6 credit hours: TCH 402 and 493, TCH 481 and 482, SED 482 and 498, or CHE 490 and 498 as potential capstone experiences

Teaching

  • By the time of final degree awarding, a candidate must have completed three years of full-time teaching.
