Chemistry eLearning Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not find an answer to your question, please contact us at ChemEd@IllinoisState.edu.

General Course Information

  • These courses are listed at the 400 level. Are they really graduate courses?
Illinois State University uses a different course numbering system than most universities. 400-Level courses are considered MS level courses for graduate credit. All courses offered through this program have been approved for graduate credit and should transfer as graduate courses. We are happy to supply a letter explaining this. Just ask!
  • What is the expected time commitment for an eLearning course?
A good rule of thumb for coursework is to assume that for every hour of credit, you will spend 2-3 hours per week outside of class. For a three-credit hour course then, you should plan to spend roughly 6-9 hours a week. Summer courses tend to be a bit more intense given that the length of the course is shortened from 16 weeks to 8 weeks.
  • Can chemistry teachers get a Master's Degree through ISU using the eLearning system?
These courses do count towards either the MCE or MSCE graduate degree in the Department of Chemistry at Illinois State University.
  • Are additional courses planned for the future, and if so, which courses?
We anticipate adding additional courses and hope to offer up to 8 to 10 total courses which will cover various additional topics. Numerous additional topics are still under consideration at this time.
  • To what level (regular, gifted, AP) are the courses geared?
The demonstrations and activities shown and the articles and assignments span from beginning to advanced chemistry courses. There are many parts that are applicable to the complete range and there are a few parts targeted to a specific audience.

Registering and Paying

  • The course listed says "0 seats available." Can I still register for this course?
Unless someone drops, it is unlikely. 0 seats available means the course is now full.
  • How/when do I pay for the course?
You will not be asked to pay immediately upon registering for a course. Rather, you will be billed directly by ISU. These bills are typically generated once a month and then mailed to your residence. You can also view your bill within the finances tab of My.IllinoisState.edu portal. You can also visit Student Accounts for more information on the billing schedule.
  • What will it cost to take an eLearning course from ISU?
Tuition and fees are charged on a per-credit hour basis, which for the 2024-25 academic year is about $1620 for a 3-credit hour course. Terms and conditions for payment, withdrawal, and refunds can be found on the Illinois State University Student Accounts web site.

Using Course Tools

  • When I try to activate my ULID, I receive the error "Record Not Found". What should I do?
In almost all cases, this is caused by not giving ISU's servers enough time to update its records. First, try waiting 24 hours and see if that resolves the error. If not, contact our help desk at 309-438-HELP (4357).
  • How do I access my ISU email account?
You can access your ISU email account by logging into My.IllinoisState.edu with your ULID and password.
  • My password expired. How do I reset it?
If you created a self-reset question when first setting your password, you should be able to reset it online. If you still have problems resetting your password, contact our help desk at 309-438-HELP (4357).
  • How do I log into Canvas?
You can access Canvas by logging into My.IllinoisState.Edu with your ULID and password. Click on the Academics Tab and then click on "Canvas" under Course Manager. Select your course in the Canvas column on the left-hand side of the page.
