Scholarship Opportunities
The Department of Chemistry offers the following scholarships. All eligible Chemistry and Biochemistry majors are automatically considered for departmental awards unless otherwise noted. University-wide awards and funding opportunities can be found on Illinois State University's ScholarshipFinder.

Shulman Scholarship
The Sol Shulman Scholarship was established in 1991 by Sol Shulman. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry. It must be evident that the student will receive a BS degree in Chemistry. An essay is required to apply for this scholarship.

Sedgwick Memorial Scholarship
The James B. Sedgwick Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry was established in 2007 by Jim and Trilby (Teters) Sedgwick, in memory of one of their children, J. Ben Sedgwick '81, M.S. '84. Eligible candidates for the scholarship will be enrolled in the chemistry major with preference given to a student with a physical/computational focus. Eligible applicants must also have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate community service or volunteer involvement. Funds must be used for educational expenses such as tuition, fees, and housing. Scholarship recipients may reapply for the award if they meet all criteria.

Sheryll (Renken) and Todd Rockway Endowed Scholarship in Biology and Chemistry
The Sheryll (Renken) and Todd Rockway Endowed Scholarship in Biology and Chemistry was established to support students with majors within the School of Biological Sciences or the Department of Chemistry. Eligible applicants must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship requires a student to demonstrate financial need to be eligible to receive the scholarship. To establish “Financial Need,” a student must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Scholarship recipients may reapply for the award if they meet all criteria.

Quizon Colquitt Family Chemistry Scholarship
The Quizon Colquitt Family Chemistry Scholarship was established by Desiree M. and André B. Quizon-Colquitt in 2023 to support students enrolled in a major within the Department of Chemistry. The scholarship is open to any grade level, including graduate students. Eligible students will have a minimum ISU cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must demonstrate financial need as determined by the financial aid office. To establish “Financial Need,” a student must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligible applicants will be asked to provide a personal statement (max. 300 words) describing the importance and value of diversity, including women and persons of color, in the chemistry profession. Scholarships will be awarded for the following term: One-Time Award, a student must reapply in subsequent years to be considered for additional funding.

Donald Heinle Memorial Scholarship
The Donald Heinle Memorial Scholarship was established in 2020 by Lance Heinle in memory of his father. Don grew up on a farm in rural North Dakota and was proud of his German heritage. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college, receiving his degree in computer science from North Dakota State College of Science in 1965. His belief in a college education was instilled in his four kids, all of whom graduated from college. This included Lance Heinle, who earned two degrees in Chemistry from Illinois State University (B.S. '99, M.S. '01). The scholarship supports students majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry from Southern Illinois who demonstrate a commitment to learning.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled in either the Chemistry or Biochemistry major and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Student must be at a grade level of: Sophomore, Junior, Senior. Preference will be given to a student from Alexander, Pulaski, Massac, Pope, Johnson, Union, Hardin, Gallatin, Saline, Williamson, Jackson, Randolph, Perry, Franklin, Hamilton, White, or Jefferson counties. Preference will also be given to a student who demonstrates a commitment to learning. Scholarship recipients may reapply for the award if they meet all criteria.
